Passages by
Glen Schmucker, Pastor

Alone
It is not good that man should be alone, God once said.  Boy, did he nail it!  Whatever God did when he put us together, he hardwired something into our system that makes it virtually impossible to be fully human apart from relationships with others.  Alone.  If there is a sadder, emptier, more vacant sounding word in the human language, I don’t know what it is.

Now and then I get the impression that God wants to make sure that I’m personally aware of what others are facing, just to keep my preaching in line with reality and my spirit bent more compassionately.  I’m not blaming my bum knee on God.  But, he sure has used it to let me know how bummed out it can feel to have to lay down and stay down for a long time, all by yourself.  Of course, Nancy ’s been there for me as I recover from surgery.  Some have sent cards and others have called.  The power of those gentle touches to eliminate the aloneness is indescribable.  But, still, there’s been no escaping these huge, hollow hunks of time - alone.

It’s not good that man should be alone.  Except, it’s been good to know what alone feels like for a little while.  Now, I’m a little more aware of the not so good way some people are all alone all the time, with no relief in sight.  I’ll never again look the same at those who suffer from incurable illnesses or who cannot leave their homes.

It’s not good that anyone should be alone.  Jesus came to us so we wouldn’t have to be alone.  Now, it’s our turn.  There are lots of people out there, all alone.  That’s not good.  And, we can change that.
