Passages by
Glen Schmucker, Pastor

Dad?

Just the other morning while I was tapping away on my computer, a text message broke in.  “Dad?”  It was my oldest son, away at college.  He’d gotten in a little bit of a bind and needed to talk.  It was one of those times when only a dad’s advice would do.  I was sorry for my son’s difficulty, grateful for it all the same.  We got to have a conversation we wouldn’t have otherwise.

Now and then the question arises, how could a loving God allow so much pain and suffering?  We don’t know.  What we can know is that problems and pain do something for us nothing else can.  They remind us of how much we need our Father.

During this Lenten season, anticipating the resurrection, we reflect on the sufferings of Jesus.  With each passing day that would lead to the cross of his suffering, Jesus seemed to become more and more aware of how much he needed his father.  His conversations with his heavenly dad became more frequent, more intense, more passionate.

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.”  The best God had to offer Jesus awaited him on the other side of suffering and death.  Why should we be surprised when it is that way for us?  The best God has to offer us and the most intense, personal and passionate moments we’ll have with our heavenly Father are most often discovered while we’re struggling.

Only when we can’t find our way alone do we remember how much we need our Father and, in a moment of humble submission, turn our hearts toward heaven and pray, “Dad?”
